GABRIEL

* * *

A knock sounded at my door, and a grunt came from the pit of my belly, vibrating up my throat.

I ignored it. They could come back later. Nothing was going to interrupt my meditation.

My eyes closed, and I cleared my head as a more urgent knock pounded.

I pushed myself up from the mat and rushed with huge strides to my door. My hand clasped around the handle, yanking the door open.

King Montreal stood in front of my door. I glanced at my watch. The ceremony was over.

I bowed in front of him. “My king.”

“Please, Gabriel, stand up.” He had a deep, kind voice, filled with frustration and a hint of sadness. “May I enter?”

“Your Highness, it’s Beaumond Academy. Once inside, you are free to roam where you want. You don’t need my permission.”

His lips curved. “I was at Beaumond for five years, Gabriel. I asked out of respect.”

“Sorry, Your Highness. I can be a fool, or so Edward tells me.”

He laughed through closed, tight lips as he stepped inside. “Durel, wait outside.”

Durel bowed his head. He was part of the Shield too and had this nasty ability, but so awesome. The king’s personal guard could change into sand. You did not want to mess with King Montreal, as Durel’s sand would cut you into tiny little pieces. The best warlock or witch wouldn’t be able to put you back together when Durel was through with you.

“Did you find her?” The words slipped from my lips.

He shook his head. “She’s not here. Which makes little sense. I wonder at times if she isn’t dead.”

“I’m so sorry, Your Highness.”

“It’s not your fault.”

He was so kind, and I wished I could help him find the missing princess, but that witch sure did a job on him.

“To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?”

The king pointed at the chair. “May I?”

“Of course, my king.”

He plopped onto the seat. He looked tired, and for a vampire, that was almost impossible.

His eyes were a mixture of blue and red. The red was so prominent.

“Your uncle told me what it is you can do.”

“I don’t see how my weapons—”

“Not your weapons.”

I froze and huffed. Betrayal washed over me as I knew what the king was saying. There were only two people that knew about my second X-Gene, and I had thought both would take it to their graves. Guessed I was wrong about the one.

“I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone. Why are you keeping it a secret?”

“I have my reasons. What can I do for you, Your Majesty?”

“Just be on the lookout, please. My daughter is here. I can feel her. I just can’t see her.”

“What happened that day?”

“You know the story. A love gone stale. Never underestimate a scorned witch, Gabriel.”

“Not my intention. Believe me, your story is one reason I promised myself no witches.” I really had to try harder to stay away from Liz.

Laughter escaped through his lips, and the corner of my lips marched up.

“Good advice,” the king said. “If you feel magic coming from a vampire, whether it’s a boy or girl, let me know.
